Google Doodle is celebrating festivities by designing a Chinese New Year Logo. Chinese New Year also called “Spring Festival” is celebrated on the new moon between 21st January and 20th February. This year the first day of the Chinese New Year is on 28th January, 2017.
Each year of the Chinese Zodiac is named after one of twelve animals (Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig, Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, and Dragon) and one of the five elements which are Wood, Fire, Metal, Earth, and Water. By looking at this year’s Chinese New Year logo we can tell this year will be the year of the Fire Rooster.
The New Year festivities are marked by myths and traditions, celebrations start on the first day of the New Year and end on the fifteenth day after the Lantern Festival.
During the evening families get together for an annual dinner. Before the dinner it is made sure the house is cleansed. This house cleansing is way of sweeping out any ill-fortune and making way for the good luck of the year to come in. Doors and windows are decorated with red colored paper cuts and couplets, also money is given as gift in red envelopes. The red color is sacred to the Chinese New Year celebration as it was thought in many traditions that the color would scare off the nian, a mythical beast who would attack villages every New Year’s Day.
Google Doodle has incorporated all the important elements of the Chinese traditions in its Chinese New Year logo, the red decorations, the rooster and the dumplings. Dumplings are a prominent part of the meals served during the celebrations.
