Dubai is going to be the first city on the globe to get the Li-Fi service. The internet users in Dubai will soon be switching to this next generation technology for the transfer of data, at the speed of light (literally). The Dubai Design District has announced the successful implementation of smart initiatives which include Dubai LiFi. The interesting part is that the Dubai LiFi will be transmitted through the city’s streetlights.

Zero 1 and a UAE-based telecommunication service provider, ‘du’ have successfully partnered up to demonstrate the use of LiFi in Dubai. The Li-Fi mobile app is a first in the region which provides an interactive guide of the design district direct to user’s smartphones. Its first phase will be launched by the end of 2017, with each of the high-end design lamps costing around $1000.

The developer of the LiFi Dubai app said that it is an exciting and noteworthy development which is a testimony of the forward-looking mindset, enhancing the city’s experience. This will help improve the quality and experience for businesses, tourists, and residents.

What is Li-Fi?

Li-Fi uses a photodetector to receive signals and convert them into streamable content which cannot be observed by the naked human eye. It stands for Light Fidelity which has a real-world download speed of multiple gigabytes, per second. It hits a whopping 224GB per second in laboratory settings which is highly impressive.

Li-Fi VS Wi-Fi

Where Wi-Fi stems from Radio Waves, Li-Fi transmits data through LED light bulbs. Li-Fi in Dubai will be able to transmit information at excessively high speeds but the only major concern is that since light cannot penetrate walls, it is not a convenient and popular indoor option. According to research, Li-Fi is 100 times faster than Wi-Fi technology and significantly cheaper, at the same time.

The two companies, du and Zero 1 will be providing a variety of analytics, communication and customer engagement solutions through the launch of Dubai Li-Fi. This is going to be a breakthrough for Dubai in becoming a Smart City.
